Catastrophic Storm Damage Restoration

Flood Services Canada’s storm damage restoration and response services have been in increasing demand over recent years due to growing changes in the climate. Thunderstorms, blizzards, and hurricanes can all result in the need for catastrophic storm response services in Toronto and surrounding cities even if the storm itself is located elsewhere.

The Effects of Storm Damagestorm damage response

Severe storms are capable of causing complex forms of property damage because of how widespread their effects can be. A heavy rainstorm may leak through your roof or foundation, but hurricane-force winds might rip the gutter off your roof. A blizzard’s snowfall can collapse weak structures and ice storms are able to burst pipes in addition to creating large melt water risks. For thunderstorms, the worst case scenario is a bolt of lightning setting fire to your property. In addition, most major storms carry with them an inevitable risk of flooding if local systems become unable to drain water faster than it arrives. Few can forget the massive flooding Toronto faced in July of 2013.

Our Storm Damage Restoration Process

Every storm and remediation case is different so the following procedure is not an absolute. However, it works quite well in many cases and both our technicians and past clients can attest to this.

Inspection and Assessment

The first task upon arriving at a work site is to get a proper assessment of the scope of damage, any complicating factors or safety risks (electrical or biological hazards for instance) and to identify the source of the flooding and stop it if necessary. Since not all water damage or infiltration is immediately apparent, specialized equipment such as infrared cameras or moisture meters will be used to detect even the most hidden patches of water within your property.

Water Extraction

This is where water extraction units such as portable and truck-mounted water extractors, submersible pumps and water vacuums are used to thoroughly extract the water from surfaces. Drying equipment is then installed to remove lingering moisture from the area. This applies to both standing water and moisture that may have infiltrated building materials. The latter is an important step to avoid further secondary water damage.

Inspection and Salvage

While the water extraction is going on, technicians will inspect building materials and property for signs that they may have been seriously compromised. Certain building materials are more easily compromised by water damage than others and it is important to find and remove these items, such as sections of drywall, before they become breeding grounds for mould or bacteria.

Water damage is not limited to just property. Pathogens such as mould or bacteria can thrive in moisture and can potentially cause serious health problems well before they are visibly noticeable. Flood Services Canada’s technicians will use air scrubbers, disinfectants, and trained inspection techniques to make sure that these pathogens don’t get a chance to set in and potentially compromise your health.
